Woolwich, Plumstead,

SE18 has quietly become one of the best-connected corners of London. The Elizabeth line at Woolwich changed everything, putting Canary Wharf under ten minutes away and the West End around twenty, with direct trains running all the way through to Heathrow. Add the DLR at Woolwich Arsenal and the Thames Clipper from Woolwich pier, and you can reach the city by rail, light rail, or river depending on your mood.
Woolwich itself has been transformed around the historic Royal Arsenal, where riverside walks, restaurants, and the Woolwich Works cultural venue now fill buildings that once made armaments. The town’s market has traded for centuries, and the Thames Barrier, one of London’s great feats of engineering, sits just along the river path.
Plumstead brings the green. Plumstead Common and Winn’s Common roll out on the doorstep, Shrewsbury Park has some of the best views over the river in South East London, and the ancient woodland of Oxleas Wood is close enough for a morning walk. Greenwich, with the Cutty Sark, the Royal Observatory, and the park, is a short hop west, and the O2 is an easy ride away for gigs.
By Elizabeth line
Canary Wharf in under ten minutes, Liverpool Street in around fifteen, Bond Street in roughly twenty, and direct trains through to Paddington and Heathrow.
By river
The Thames Clipper from Woolwich pier is the scenic commute, gliding past Greenwich, the O2, and Tower Bridge on its way into the centre.
On foot
Riverside walks at Royal Arsenal, centuries of history at Woolwich Market, and the commons and woodland of Plumstead when you want green over grey.
