London Mayor Boris Johnson has unveiled a sleek new vision for potentially driverless tube trains amid planned protests.
The so-called ‘New Tube for London’ will have air cooling systems to combat the stifling temperatures suffered by commuters. The walk-through carriages will also feature double doors to increase capacity.
The promo video released today also nods to a new era of advertising on carriages, with modern tech unlocking digital capabilities. Watch out London-based marketers.
Johnson said that the “slightly sinister, Darth Vaderish look” upgrades are vital in a modernising London.
He said: “They will ferry millions of people across our city, more comfortably, reliably and stylishly than ever before. The New Tube marks a significant step forward in giving Londoners and visitors the accessible and modern transport service that they expect and deserve.”
The unveiling comes as planned strike action had been suspended following “substantial progress” in talks.
